Today we have two songs related to sacrifices made in relationships. Even though we may have to let go of something or someone, God can work through that change to bring growth, to strengthen relationships, and to expand our circle of love.

Ever Closer Episode 186: Reflection for Week 31

You can never out give God. Anything you sacrifice for his salvation work in people’s lives, he more than makes up for by multiplying your effort, providing for your needs, and blessing you with a greater realization of Himself. Our scripture focus this week is an insight from Jesus found in John 12:24, “Unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains by itself alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.”

Here are three thoughts to consider:

1. Jesus uses the metaphor of a seed dying to produce fruit. What area of your life—a comfort, habit, possession, or right—might God be asking you to “let die” so that something more beautiful can grow? What fears keep you from this surrender?

2. “Fire Within” describes God’s indwelling presence as an illuminating, and transforming fire. How is God’s presence in you challenging comfortable patterns of self-protection and self-preservation? What needs to be consumed by this fire so you can more freely sacrifice for others?

3. The songs “Tucking Them In” and “Always Here for You” illustrate the sacrifices parents make for children. What practical sacrifices can you make this week (time, convenience, preference, recognition) to serve someone God has placed in your life? How might this sacrifice bear fruit?
