This week my advisory students and I learned about the value of Applying Past Knowledge which is a discipline effective people practice. Recalling what you have learned, understanding the world around you, and then extending that experience to explore and address new, foreign circumstances and concepts is important especially as you face today’s world of rapidly changing job markets, difficult challenges, and dynamic lifestyles. One of the discussion questions I asked my students regarding this topic was, “What is something you learned from a parent, grandparent, or mentor which you would like to pass on to your kids or nieces and nephews?” A recurring theme emerged from their answers, which was to make the most of the gifts and opportunities you are given when you are young. In other words, recognize the value of what you are given and don’t waste it.
This is wise advice which also applies to relationships. People in your life are important. They are worth learning from and investing in. This is even more true of God. He is absolutely the most important and well worth cultivating the deepest of relationships with. I encourage you to consider making the most of life by joining God’s family, becoming like him, and doing what he does. You can do so by trusting Jesus to save you from your wrongdoing and to help you live rightly. Whether you have never known God yet, have drifted from him, or haven’t made him the priority that he should be, don’t put this off. Seek God while he may be found (Isaiah 55:6-9). Pursue him now rather than later. Choosing to trust and obey Jesus is the best decision I have ever made. I know it will be for you also. So pray and ask God to reveal himself to you. Read about Jesus in the Bible. The book of John is an excellent place to start. Ask questions. Talk to other Christians. In addition, I’d be happy to talk with you and answer any questions you have. I’ll end today’s note with a poem I wrote which I hope inspires you to seek truth, love, and fulfillment from God now rather than later. God created you and loves you. He wants to share his abundant, everlasting life with you through Jesus (Genesis 1:26-27; Colossians 1:15-20; John 3:16-21).
Choose Sooner
In the journey of life, my friend, hear me now,
For within these words lies a sacred vow.
Follow God sooner, let not life delay,
For the wages of unchecked wrongdoing will slay,
Satan seeks to steal, maim, and enslave your soul,
But there’s hope, for God’s grace in Christ can make you whole.
God accepts you, yes, just the way you are,
Yet His love is too deep to leave you afar.
He beckons you closer, to a life that’s divine,
Adoption as his child, with blessings sublime.
But if you linger, wand’ring lost in darkness,
His light, His goodness, His best, you will miss.
So choose now the right path, not bent but straight,
Fear not, step by faith, for glory with Him awaits,
Chase not after fleeting desires, which consume like fire
Descend not lower, let God lift you higher,
If you continue to ignore God’s loving call
Each step away makes it harder to hear him at all
That path, my friend, is but a treacherous slope,
With a dead-end awaiting, void of all hope.
Only by walking hand in hand with the divine,
Will your soul find solace, will true satisfaction be thine.
So heed this wisdom, attend to it I plea,
For only in God’s embrace will your soul find peace.
